Introduction

D&W Underground is a stunning event venue located in downtown Abilene, Texas.  Our building boasts elegant architecture and a rich history, providing the perfect backdrop for any occasion. Originally constructed in 1927 as a Buick dealership, the building has undergone several transformations over the years, serving as a tire store, drive-through gas station, appliance and furniture store. Today, the building has been beautifully restored with elegant and industrial-style architecture, ensuring an unforgettable experience for your guests.

More history/timeline

The building located at 1201 South First has a rich history. Constructed by S.B. Shelton in 1927, it was initially built as a Buick dealership. However, when the Great Depression struck in 1929, Buick corporate was forced to relocate and the building was left empty until it was purchased by Jessie Franklin Winters in 1932.

Winters, a former professional baseball pitcher for the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies, went on to become the mayor of Abilene from 1957 to 1959. In honor of his contributions to the city, the Winters Freeway was named after him.

The Buick dealership was transformed into D&W Tire store and drive-through gas station, which operated from 1932 to 1951. Eventually, the business evolved into D&W Appliance and D&W Furniture before it was sold to Tom Rose of Tomas Everett Furniture.

In March of 2020, Robert & Holly Hoemke acquired the building and now its current owner.

Experience the beauty of the past and the fun of the present.
